Before you get lost and something kills you, let me make things easier and give you a little info. on the area. First you should know that the California you’re standing in isn’t exactly the one you’re used to. It’s a long story that has to do with the Powers That Be and the Old Ones, and it’s just a lot to get into. Basically, this is its own dimension separate from whatever one you just blew in from. I’m going to give you some information on some places you’ve probably seen before in whatever world you came from, but I’m going to look at it from a couple different angles to give you an idea of just how warped things are.
The thing to know here is that all three of those guys are the same person. A guy named Richard Wilkins did show up in the area during the Gold Rush, and he did found the town of Sunnydale. But, he found a little surprise: there was a big old doorway to Hell located on this little scrap of land he’d claimed. He ended up making a pact with the demons living in and around the Hellmouth, agreeing to bring people in for the demons to feed on if they made him immortal by making him a pure demon.
In 1937, one of these earthquakes swallowed a church that also happened to be the lair of an old, powerful vampire called The Master. The guy ended up being mystically trapped underground.
For the most part, Sunnydale operated like a normal town, but by the 1990’s it had developed kind of a bad reputation, with all the “animal attacks” and “gang violence” happening. See, the mayor had a lot of supernatural stuff covered up. But just because you say something’s not happening, that doesn’t mean everyone’s going to buy it.
In 1997, the Slayer came to Sunnydale. That’s when everything changed. But that’s another one of those long stories we don’t need to get into. All you need to know for now is that Buffy being there was key.
In 1999, The Mayor was supposed to become this big bad demon and bring Hell to Earth, which is like a requirement for big bad demons these days.
The last really important thing to happen in Sunnydale happened in 2003 when Buffy found this special Scythe, her buddy Willow worked some witchy mojo, there was a battle. The end result was that this big bad evil called The First was defeated, the town was totally destroyed, and Buffy’s power was divided among all the Potential Slayers, creating an army.
One of the most developed alternate versions of Sunnydale is something we call the Wishverse. Basically, this Sunnydale was created when one of Buffy’s acquaintances, Cordelia, met a Vengeance Demon and wished Buffy never came to Sunnydale. This sucked her into an alternate reality where The Master got out of his cage and vampires took over the town.
The Sunnydale you’ll find is another alternate reality. It seems to be a fairly modern setting, but there are some people and places hanging around that shouldn’t be there if that’s the case, so the timeline’s a little skewed to say the least. It seems like all bets are off in this place, so watch your back.
This virus seems like it’s got some kind of demonic thing going on. It created a breed of vampire called “Los Perididos,” which is Spanish for “the lost”. They’re also called: “Los Niños Perdidos,” meaning “the lost boys” or “the lost children”. Mostly that gets shortened to just “Los Niños.”
Santa Carla used to be a port town, and it still kind of is. In the 1980’s and 1990’s it was a tourist area, but now it’s just a rundown beach town. It’s only major attraction is The Boardwalk, which is the oldest beachside amusement park on the West Coast. This place has a worse rep. than Sunnydale, with a high crime rate that earned it the nickname of “murder capital of the world.”
There are other cities and towns in the county, but those are the two with the most going on.
Sunnydale
“Sunnydale was founded in the late 1800s by Richard Wilkins during the Gold Rush. Wilkins became the first mayor of the town. His son, Richard Wilkins, Jr., succeeded him. The current mayor, Richard Wilkins, III, is the son of Richard Wilkins, Jr., and the grandson of Richard Wilkins.”– from A History of Sunnydale by D. Greenwalt.

“The area was plagued by earthquakes throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, some minor inconveniences and others major disasters. The most notable were in 1812, 1906, 1932, and 1937. Each of these major earthquakes cause severe damage to the town, swallowing sections of it right into the ground.”– from A History of Sunnydale by D. Greenwalt.

“When she first arrived in Sunnydale, Buffy Summers was resistant to accept her Calling as the Slayer…”– from The Watcher Diaries by R. Giles.

“I’m pleased to say that Buffy has successfully prevented The Mayor’s Ascension. This resulted in the deaths of Mayor Richard Wilkins, and Principal Snyder as well as the destruction of Sunnydale High School.”- from The Watcher Diaries by R. Giles

Santa Carla
“Santa Carla was discovered in 1771 by Spanish explorers. Settlers from Mexico assumed control of the territory in the 1800s after many of the original Spanish settlers mysteriously disappeared. It was a phenomenon that would later be called the 'Croatoan of the West' by historians. It became a city in 1850 as part of the county of Santa Cruz…”- from A Guide to Santa Carla by R. Donner
“In 1790 a mysterious virus began to plague the settlers. People experienced changes in appetite and behavior, sensitivity to light, and even sensitivity to water in some cases. Soon, those infected by this virus exhibited violent behavior, even cannibalistic in some instances. Those settlers who were not infected by the virus either fled the area, or disappeared. By the time the Mexicans began settling, it seemed just about everyone residing there previously had died or disappeared. No one knows the exact origin of this virus, but some scientists and historians believe it was something similar to the Bubonic Plague that occurred in Europe in the 1300’s.”– from A Study of Santa Carla by Dr. J. Schumacher.
