Personality
Describe: For the most part, Sam's a decent guy. When the opportunity arises, he makes friends easily and tries his best to hold onto those friendships (though, with his lifestyle, it's nearly impossible). But, he's the kind of person who, once he trusts you, is a loyal friend for life. No matter how long it's been since he's seen you, since you've even spoken, if you're a friend and you call him at 2 a.m. needing some serious help, he'll do anything he can to be there for you.
On the flip side, Sam also expects that loyalty in return. He values his friends and loved ones above all else, and appreciates them, accepts them for who they are. In return, he assumes his loved ones feel the same toward him. However, if you betray Sam - whether it's by stabbing him in the back (literally or figuratively - both happen a lot), or not trusting him as he trusts you - it hurts him deeply.
Once you gain Sam's trust, it's really hard to lose it. He gives everyone the benefit of the doubt and often gives second, sometimes even third chances. He has a way of finding the good in everyone, which more often than not screws him over in the end. But, he also makes friends and allies he wouldn't have otherwise. But, once you do lose his trust - truly lose it - it's impossible to gain it back.
Sam is willing to compromise on a lot of things, but he's a lot more like Dean than people tend to think. He can be just as stubborn as his brother and father when he feels like it. When Sam feels strongly about something, he doesn't back down and will do whatever he can to prove his point. This sometimes causes him to behave recklessly in the heat of the moment.
It's been impossible so far for Sam to hold down a steady relationship. Ever since Jessica's death, he hasn't really been looking for a long-term relationship, yet he does miss having someone to crawl into bed with at night. He grows attached to women quickly, but just as quickly that attachment dissolves for one reason or another. He's also afraid to let anyone get that close to him again, for he could endanger them.
Since Dean’s death, Sam’s personality has changed drastically, even though at the core he’s still the same man. He’s become more hardened and aggressive and when he hunts, he can be reckless and dangerous. He’s cold and stand-offish, and he’s not trying to make any friends. He doesn’t trust anyone easily, he’s paranoid, and hell-bent on avenging his brother’s death.

“Fatal Flaw”: Sam is his own worst enemy. He doubts himself and when he doesn’t have anyone to reassure him that he’s doing the right thing, he gets morally confused and second-guesses himself, which frustrates him and makes it hard for him to make decisions.
History
Sam Winchester was born on May 2, 1983 to John and Mary Winchester in Lawrence, Kansas. When Sam was a baby, a demon called Azazel visited him and fed him his own demon blood. His mother interrupted and was killed by the demon in what looked like a bizarre fire. This event drastically altered the Winchesters' lives. John became obsessed with Mary's death and started doing research into the supernatural world. He became a hunter and raised his oldest son, Dean, to do the same.
The truth behind Mary's death and his father's occupation was kept from Sam until he was eight years old. He found John's hunting journal and when he asked Dean about it, he confirmed that their mother had been killed by a demon and he and John hunted supernatural beings.
The Winchesters moved a lot, which made it difficult for Sam and Dean to make friends growing up. Sam disliked this aspect of their lives, and tried to focus on the academic side of school rather than the social side. He was always a very good student. His father and brother also trained him to hunt throughout his childhood and adolescence.
After graduating high school, Sam decided to go to college. This caused a lot of tension with John and Dean, for it would mean he was abandoning their lifestyle. But, Sam had decided he was tired of being a freak. He wanted to settle down and try to live a normal life in one place. He and his father had a falling out and Sam attended Stanford University, where he studied Law.
Stanford was the first place Sam ever felt like he fit in, although he was keeping a large part of his life a secret. He had friends and was well-liked, and he had a serious girlfriend, Jessica. After a few years, Sam was getting ready to go to law school and living with Jessica.
Then Dean payed him a visit.
After some coaxing, Sam agreed to help Dean find their father, as long as he was home in time for his interview. Despite being out of comission for three or four years, Sam fell back into hunting with Dean almost seamlessly. However, he made it very clear that he had no desire to re-join the hunting life. However, when he returned home, Sam was greeted by his girlfriend...
...engulfed in flames on the ceiling above their bed.
Convinced that the same demon that killed his mother had killed the love of his life, Sam abandoned his life at Stanford and went on the road with Dean. They led a nomadic lifestyle, taking cases as they came while trying to find their father and the creature that killed their loved ones, the demon Azazel (known as Yellow-Eyes).
As they continued hunting, Sam began developing psychic abilities. He had nightmares that predicted the future, which startled him when they started happening during his waking life.
When they found John - or, rather, John found them - he revealed a special Colt revolver (known as "the Colt") that could supposedly kill anything. His plan was to use it to kill the demon. Unfortunately all did not go as planned. After the Winchesters got into a car accident, Dean was severely injured and left in a coma. Unknown to Sam at the time, John summoned Azazel and made a deal with him - his soul for Dean's. Miraculously, Dean awoke from his coma... but John died soon after.
As they continued hunting, Sam and Dean soon found other people with abilities like Sam's. Sam also displayed immunity to mind-control and a demonic virus. Dean confessed that before he died, John told him that Azazel was building an army, planning to use Sam and the others like him as his soldiers.
At one point, Sam was possessed by a demon he and Dean encountered during their travels. After the demon left him, Sam and Dean got sigils tattoo'd on their chests to prevent demonic possession.
Sam, and the others like him with special abilities, were brought to a ghost town to compete in a bizarre contest designed by Azazel - a last man standing situation. The last man standing would be his general. In the end, Sam and a man named Jake were the only remaining "contestents". Jake stabbed Sam, killing him.
Unwilling to accept his brother's death, Dean made a deal with a Crossroads Demon - his soul for Sam's - and was given a year to live. At first, when he was resurrected, Sam had no memory of ever being dead. But, once he discovered what had happened, Sam became determined to get his brother out of the deal.
Dean used the Colt revolver to kill Azazel, but not before the Devil's Gate to Hell was opened, letting a number of demons free.
As they searched for a way out of Dean's deal, Sam and Dean also hunted down as many demons as they could. Along the way, they met a demon named Ruby, who seemed to be on their side.
After months of trying and failing to find a loophole in Dean's contract - held by a powerful demon called Lilith - Dean was killed by hell-hounds and sent to Hell.
Sam is now doing everything he can to find a way to bring him back.
